PUFFINS IN THE PAST ….
in 2018 : with Roger Wallis to Svalbard
Two teams of Puffins were the lucky birds who explored untouched West-Spitsbergen for 10 days aboard the beautiful Bermuda schooner Abel Tasman. In the experienced hands of BBC/Frozen Planet Captain Roger Wallis they undertook an expedition on the brink of the Arctic Summer. We sailed along the Isfjorden to the peaks of the iconic Magdalenafjorden in the North West. In Smeerenburg and Virgohamna, we learned about the adventures of whale hunters and polar pioneers. We spotted a zillion puffins and other seabirds, three polar bears, several colonies of walruses and a school of white beluga, arctic foxes, reindeer. We counted numerous majestic glaciers. We visited the active mine of Barentsburg and the intriguing ghost town of Pyramiden. In Ny-Ålesund, we talked with climate scientists.
in 2017 : the year of Expedition Greenland
What a start for the young puffling! We discovered the luxury sailing yacht, the Moonlight II of London in our backyard in Zeebrugge and convinced the yacht owner to explore the West coast of Greenland together with Puffins. With 75 pioneers in 9 groups, we sailed from the capital Nuuk, into our treasured Eternity Fjord, to the icefjord of Ilulissat and the big ice castles surrounding the heart-shaped mountain of Uummannaq. We chased the Aurora in the South West, were awed by the big walls of Tasermiut Fjord and had our passage through the illustrious Prins Christian Sund. We hiked on terra incognita, paddled between ice and in front of glacier walls, bbq’ed on the beach of deslote mountain lakes, visited small Inuit villages and said hello to whales and musk oxen. In 2020, you’ll get the chance to be part of it.
